David Teniers probably produced an oil study on canvas or panel (so-called pasticcio) of every painting in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived., the rape of Ganymede: he is carried off through the air by Jupiter in the form of an eagle, or by the eagle of Jupiter, An etched scene shows a partially draped winged figure with a youthful face being carried by a large bird with outstretched wings; the bird’s head and neck curve around the figure’s torso while the figure’s arms and legs extend outward and fabric billows behind the head. Below them a landscape contains ruins of classical columns and a distant fortified settlement set among rolling hills and rocky outcrops. In the foreground a seated dog-like animal looks upward toward the airborne pair while a small group of three walking figures appear near a cave-like rocky formation. Trees and shrubs dot the terrain and clouds fill the sky above.
