Meadows at the Kaag, with mailbox, Mailbox, Kaag (original title), print, printmaker: Willem Bastiaan Tholen (signed by artist), 1870 - 1914, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 130 mm x width 275 mm, meadow, pasture, postal service, A sepia-toned landscape drawing shows a grassy foreground with various small wildflowers and clumps of vegetation, leading to an open field that stretches toward a distant horizon. Near the right edge stands a tall wooden structure with a pitched roof and two vertical supports, casting a shadow on the ground; an object hangs from one of its sides. In the middle distance, low shrubs and reeds line the edge of a waterway, and a sailboat is partially visible with a raised sail. Far across the field on the horizon are several windmills and small buildings, and a scattering of birds is drawn in the sky above. The scene is rendered with fine, sketch-like lines and soft shading, with mottling and faint spots across the surface.
