The scene is supplemented at the top with a painted sky., city-view in general, 'veduta', river, Étampes, A wide pale sky with soft horizontal bands of blue and pink washes and scattered cloud shapes fills the upper area, below which a distant town with clustered buildings and church spires sits against rolling green hills, a taller ruined tower standing on a slope to the right; in the foreground a winding river and meandering waterways cut through marshy land dotted with small houses and trees, while three small figures and a dog stand on a grassy ridge near a twisted tree and another figure reclines nearby, and two riders are visible further along a track.
