Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius, 1657., city-view in general, 'veduta', Bordeaux, A tall rectangular image framed by a pale yellow border shows a stylized aerial view of a walled coastal town occupying the lower portion and a wide sky above. The sky displays soft horizontal bands of pale blue and pink with two rounded, lavender-hued cloud forms near the horizon. Below, the town is depicted with a dense arrangement of narrow streets and compact blocks of buildings rendered in muted tones of red, brown, and green, with many steep gabled roofs and occasional taller church-like spires and towers. Defensive walls with rounded bastions surround much of the town and extend to the waterfront, where several sailing ships with billowing sails float on a calm, blue-gray sea. Outside the walls, the surrounding countryside is shown with rolling green fields, a meandering river or stream flowing toward the town, scattered small buildings, and a circular ruin-like structure set on a distant hill. The overall style is detailed and maplike, with fine line work and watercolor shading.
