Drunken farmer in a tavern, print, A farmer sits on a low bench in a tavern, with a jug in his hand. In the background, three men at a table. The print is loose in an album, see page 25., inscription: 'A. Brouwer del. 1635. CPloos van Amstel JC fecit 1775', printmaker: Bernhard Schreuder, after drawing by Adriaen Brouwer, supervision: Cornelis Ploos van Amstel (signed by artist), Amsterdam, 1775, paper, print drawing, etching, roulette, etching and roulette, printed in brown, height 193 mm x width 157 mm, inn, coffee-house, public house, drinking, jar, jug (used as drinking-vessel), A sepia-toned drawing shows a scene with several seated men and simple wooden furniture. In the foreground a man leans back against a rough vertical wooden plank, his head tilted and his eyes closed, one hand near his chest and the other resting on his lap, a jug placed by his knee and a hat on the ground nearby. He wears a loose shirt, worn trousers, and a floppy hat. To the left, a bench holds two other figures: one faces away with a rounded back and a cap, another sits beside him holding a raised cup. Behind them a partially visible figure reclines against the wall. Rough vertical planks form a partition or wall on the right, with several long sticks or poles leaning nearby. The floor and furnishings are simply rendered, and shading creates soft shadows beneath the figures and furniture.
