Flooded meadows near a dike, print, printmaker: Maurits van der Valk (signed by artist), 1867 - 1931, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, etching with plate tone in brown, height 117 mm x width 220 mm, water meadows under water, A sepia-toned etching shows a marshy shoreline with sloping grassy banks in the foreground and midground, rendered with fine, parallel hatch marks. Wooden posts and simple framed structures extend into the shallow water at several points, some standing alone and others connected by narrow rails or ropes. Low, irregular clumps of reeds and marsh vegetation sit at the water’s edge, with reflective water surfaces between the banks. A distant, low tree line stretches across the horizon beneath a sky filled with elongated, cloud-like forms drawn with thin, undulating lines. The overall scene is composed of delicate linear textures and subtle tonal variations.
