On verso a fragment of an etching with sailing ships at sea., printmaker: Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp (signed by artist), in or after 1898, paper, zinc etching, intaglio printmaking technique, etching with plate tone on zinc, height 106 mm x width 306 mm, trees, Java, Buitenzorg (West-Java), West-Java, An intricate sepia-toned ink drawing of a swampy forest with many trees of varying thickness, long exposed roots twisting over the ground, and hanging moss or drapery-like growths suspended from branches; the composition stretches wide with dense root systems in the foreground, slender trunks rising and curving, a layered background of more distant trees and arching branches, and areas where large horizontal limbs create canopy-like forms with dripping textures, all rendered with fine linear detail and crosshatching on a textured paper surface.
