Pasture landscape with ditch and windmill, print, printmaker: Maurits van der Valk (signed by artist), 1867 - 1914, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, etching with plate tone, proof print, height 98 mm x width 190 mm, meadow, pasture, windmill in landscape, small canal, ditch, A wide landscape sketch rendered in fine lines shows a flat marshy plain with a narrow waterway running from the foreground toward the middle ground, flanked by grassy banks and clusters of low vegetation. On the right side a traditional windmill stands on a raised base with a thatched lower section and a wooden cabin above, its angled sails stretching upward and crossing each other. A simple wooden staircase and support beams connect the mill to the ground, and small fences and posts dot the surrounding area. Low, rounded clouds fill much of the sky, layered with horizontal line shading, and distant low trees and field structures appear along the horizon. The overall palette is sepia-toned with delicate cross-hatching and linear textures throughout.
