Saint carried by angels, print, printmaker: Heinrich Vianden, Germany (possibly), 1836, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 197 mm x width 250 mm, angels, city-view, and landscape with man-made constructions, being carried, A finely detailed pen-and-ink drawing shows three winged figures in flight across a pale background. One figure lies draped on a cloth with long hair falling back and an arm hanging downward, another figure supports this reclining figure from behind with a calm face and a halo, and a third figure at the front faces sideways with an outstretched arm and a halo, wings arched around each body. Flowing drapery and feathered wings are rendered with fine hatching, and below them a distant shoreline and low hills are indicated with light linear strokes. The composition is monochrome with delicate line work and areas of crosshatching defining form and shadow.
