In the upper scene two small cats are positioned around a round dish, one facing directly toward the dish with its head lowered as if drinking and the other curled with its head tucked down nearby; the dish sits on a horizontal surface indicated by short, parallel strokes and a smudged shadow beside it. A wide, blank band of lighter paper separates the two scenes. In the lower scene a larger cat is shown in profile, curled with its body facing away and its head turned to the side to drink from a shallow plate placed at the edge of the composition; fine, diagonal hatch marks fill the surrounding floor area, and the paper shows spots, smudges, and subtle stains throughout.
