Each portrait is an illustration accompanying the biography of an artist or scholar. Most of the portraits were produced by Nicolas de Larmessin (162), 93 by De Boulonois and a third by unidentified printmakers. This concerns an illustration on p. 35, part I., Person, Jean de Selve, historical persons, diplomacy, diplomat, A sepia-toned engraved portrait of a man shown in profile facing right, wearing a rounded, soft hat with a band and a textured cloak with a patterned collar, his hair curled around the ear and sideburns visible, a prominent nose and defined facial features rendered with fine crosshatching, the background filled with dense horizontal and vertical engraved lines, a printed title beneath the portrait with decorative initial and blocks of printed text below, ornate border elements at the lower left and page numbering and heading at the top.
