Brussels: François Foppens, 1682. The book was also published in Amsterdam in 1682 by the heirs of Daniel Elzevier. Each portrait is an illustration accompanying the biography of an artist or scholar. Most of the portraits were produced by Nicolas de Larmessin (162), 93 by De Boulonois and a third by unidentified printmakers. This refers to an illustration on p. 249, part I., Person, Pierre Pithou, historical persons, The image shows an engraved portrait of a man inside an oval frame wearing a high, ruffled collar and a hat with a broad, folded brim; he has a mustache and a pointed beard, and his clothing includes a buttoned coat with a visible shoulder drape. The oval frame rests on a decorative cartouche with scroll-like elements beneath it, and there is a column of printed text and an ornamental roundel below the cartouche. The background of the portrait features closely spaced horizontal hatch lines, and the page exhibits a light, aged paper tone.
