View of an orchard near Honfleur, Verger près de Houfleur (original title), print, In the middle, a woman with a parasol and a child by the hand walks between the trees., printmaker: Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande, c. 1873, Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 138 mm x width 215 mm, orchard, Honfleur, A sepia-toned etching shows a shoreline scene with many gnarled, windswept trees whose twisted trunks and branches spread across the composition, their sparse foliage rendered with fine lines. In the foreground a woman holding an umbrella stands beside a small child, both facing toward the water. Nearby a bench sits under a tree, and farther back another bench holds a seated figure while a standing figure walks along the shore. Two figures stand together near the waterline in the midground. The surface of the water and the sky are indicated by horizontal hatch marks, and low vegetation lines the distant shore. The overall image is composed of delicate, linear engraving marks that define the trees, figures, and ground.
