One man stands at the right foreground holding a long handled tool and wearing layered garments, his face shown in profile with curly hair and a beard. Near the center a seated man leans on the table, hands forward, his face turned toward another figure with a beard who stands behind him. At the left a cloaked figure faces the group with a raised hand. In the background shadowy silhouettes of additional figures appear under a heavy, textured arching overhead shadow. To the right on a workbench there is a clamp or vise and a rounded object resting on the surface. Various draped fabrics, tools, and rough wooden surfaces are suggested by strong strokes and crosshatching throughout the composition. The overall palette is monochrome with strong contrasts between deep blacks and lighter gray tones.
