Latomie del Paradiso in Siracusa, View of Latomie del Paradiso in Syracuse, Sicily, photograph, number: 'No. 1384.', photographer: Giorgio Sommer, Syracuse (city), 1857 - 1914, pasteboard, paper, albumen print, height 309 mm x width 385 mm, quarry, A sepia-toned landscape showing a rugged cliff face with rough, weathered rock formations rising prominently in the center and right, textured with crevices and patches of vegetation clinging to ledges. In the midground a tall, narrow pillar of rock stands apart from the main cliff, topped with low shrubs, and a flat-topped ruin sits further back on the plateau. Dark cave-like openings and overhangs are visible along the cliff line, while scattered boulders and dense low bushes occupy the foreground, creating a contrast between the pale limestone surfaces and the darker foliage. The sky above is pale and largely empty.
