Milan Cathedral, MILAN. LA CATTEDRALE DAL PALAZZO REALE, photograph, number: '3818.', Milan, c. 1875 - c. 1900, photographer, Lombardy, paper, pasteboard, albumen print, height 185 mm x width 248 mm, church (exterior), Dom (Milan), A large Gothic cathedral façade fills the frame with numerous tall pointed spires and pinnacles rising from ornate buttresses and decorative vertical elements; the stone exterior shows many carved statues set into niches, arched doorways with sculpted surrounds, and traceried windows with pointed arches. The foreground shows a paved plaza with steps leading up to the building, a low railing, and a few small groups of people standing or sitting near the entrances. To the right, the cathedral continues with more flying buttresses and a tall central tower topped by a slender spire. Along the left and right edges of the image, multi-story buildings with rows of windows and arcades are visible, and a few street lamps and horse-drawn carriages can be seen near the plaza. The overall image has a sepia tone and a high level of architectural detail.
