View of two gates in Beijing, page, photomechanical print, photographer: Donald Mennie, Beijing, cliché maker: anonymous, c. 1915 - in or before 1920, paper, rotogravure, height 257 mm x width 203 mm, gate, entrance, A sepia-toned view through a series of brick archways opening onto a street scene, with the nearest archway framing a passageway floor showing wet patches and a stone in the foreground. Beyond the arch, a person walks away leading a donkey on a rope, other figures and animals are visible further down the street, and a small wooden shelter or stall stands to one side. Trees with bare branches rise above the far wall, and the brickwork of the arches and adjoining walls shows texture and wear. Light filters through the arches creating areas of shadow and brightness along the ground and walls.
