View of a house among trees, page, photomechanical print, photographer: Donald Mennie, Beijing, cliché maker: anonymous, c. 1915 - in or before 1920, paper, rotogravure, height 278 mm x width 203 mm, trees, rural housing, eg country-house, villa, cottage, China, A large tree trunk and thick horizontal branches fill the upper and left portions of the image, their textured bark and needle-like foliage creating a dense canopy. Beneath the branches, a tiled-roof building with patterned windows and a central doorway sits partially obscured by trees and shrubs. In front of the building, a stone wall and a set of worn stone steps descend into a shaded area framed by vegetation. The scene is monochrome, with strong contrasts between the dark tree silhouettes and the lighter background foliage and architectural surfaces.
