On the platform a man lies on a decorated bier beneath a canopy, dressed in formal attire and wearing medals, while attendants stand nearby in dark military uniforms with plumed helmets. Rows of seated and standing figures fill the left side of the room, many wearing head coverings and looking toward the platform. Several large multi-tiered candelabras and hanging chandeliers cast light and smoke throughout the space, and a long swath of fabric trails from the canopy toward the floor. The overall palette is monochromatic with soft contrasts and detailed textile and decorative patterns.
