The soldiers wear helmets and armor and some hold spears or flags, one mounted on horseback. A group of men in varied clothing assist or restrain the central figure while others look on intensely. Several women with head coverings reach toward the kneeling man with expressive, sorrowful faces. In the background a landscape with trees, distant figures and a hill is visible, and architectural columns frame part of the right side. The ground foreground contains rocks and foliage, and the composition is rendered with fine line work and shading.
