Men in dark clothing are seated and standing along the benches, some facing the camera and some turned toward the work, while a few figures stand in the aisle. Overhead pipes and a system of pulleys or belts run along the ceiling supported by columns, and light comes through tall multi-pane windows along the far wall. In the foreground there are large wooden partitions and neatly piled bundles on the benches, and the overall image has a tonal, monochrome appearance.
