Portal of Lichfield Cathedral, photograph, page, photographer: John Benjamin Stone, Lichfield, c. 1865 - in or before 1870, Staffordshire, paper, albumen print, height 180 mm x width 127 mm, church (exterior), parts of church exterior and annexes: portal, An ornate stone doorway with a scalloped arch richly carved with foliage motifs frames a dark recessed area; the door surface is covered in swirling vine-like relief patterns. Flanking the doorway are carved columnar figures standing on small pedestals, each draped in flowing robes and positioned within decorative niches. A central slender column rises between the door panels, topped with an elaborately carved capital and a statue of a robed female figure holding a small child. Additional small sculptural canopies and intricate architectural details adorn the jambs and capitals on either side. The image has a monochrome, sepia-toned appearance.
