The upper scene depicts a wide excavation site with uneven earth, scattered construction debris, wooden planks, barrels, and tools surrounding a narrow trench that runs toward a circular tunnel entrance with a ladder propped against it; a few men stand on the trench edges and on wooden scaffolding, and low rolling hills and sparse trees form the distant background under a pale sky. The lower scene shows a brick-lined arched tunnel opening set into an earthen and stone cut, with several men standing on the arch and inside the tunnel near a small cart and rail track, rubble and loose bricks scattered at the base of the arch, and a reflective pool of water in the foreground mirroring parts of the arch and figures.
