In the midground there are earthen mounds and fortified walls flanking a long straight avenue that recedes toward a lock or sluice with a small group of figures nearby. In the foreground a group of three well-dressed figures stand near a fence while another seated figure sketches or writes, and two dogs lie on the ground near scattered rocks and plants. A picket-style fence runs across the scene in front of the avenue and mounds. The overall image is rendered in fine linear etching with varied hatching to indicate texture and shadow.
