Part of a group of individual caricatures of Louis XIV during the War of Spanish Succession, ca. 1701-1713., inscription: '17 9, 10 06', printmaker, publisher, Northern Netherlands, paper, etching, letterpress printing, etching with text in letterpress, height 295 mm x width 163 mm, political caricatures and satires, Capture of Dendermonde (1706), Period, 1706-09-05, A pen-and-ink scene shows a man seated in a small cart pulled by a donkey, the seated figure wearing a tall hat with plumes and a long coat, one leg extended and the hands holding a folded sheet, a large banner with decorative motifs rises behind him beneath a tree with dense foliage; beside the cart another man stands with one foot on the donkey’s back, wearing a tricorne-style hat and a coat with cuffs, holding the animal’s tail, while the donkey’s head is turned slightly downward and bridled, all set against a background of distant low buildings and a sky with wispy clouds.
