To the right a second man leans back against the monument with an alarmed expression, one arm raised and the other near a stack of scattered books and papers at his feet. Behind them a large tree with dense foliage fills the upper area, and the monument bears a circular carved portrait in profile. Fine crosshatching and line work create textured shading throughout the scene.
