Buildings on the Aar, print, printmaker: Joseph Hartogensis, unknown, c. 1837 - 1865, paper, chine collé, etching, etching on chine collé, height 50 mm x width 86 mm, rural housing, eg country-house, villa, cottage, river, Aare, A monochrome etching shows a cluster of rustic buildings along a dirt foreground, with a large multi-story structure on the left featuring a steep roof and textured stone walls, a central timber-framed house with a gabled roof and a tall doorway, and a smaller arched entrance building to the right. Trees with detailed foliage rise beside and behind the houses, and a thin plume of smoke curls from a chimney on the central house. The sky is filled with horizontal hatch marks and sparse cloud-like strokes, and low rolling hills appear in the distant background to the right. Small figures and indistinct shapes populate the ground near the buildings, and varied line work creates grassy and rocky textures in the foreground.
