Below the sky a distant skyline of towers and spires stretches across the middle ground, each topped with pointed or domed roofs and interspersed with smaller buildings and walls. In the foreground there is a hilly, textured landscape with groups of small figures in period clothing; some figures stand on rocks observing while others appear seated or gathered in rows, and a few are shown in motion carrying objects or engaging in activity. The lower foreground also includes a regimented line of uniformed figures and scattered tools or equipment, all depicted in detailed etched strokes.
