Le Puy (original title on object), print, A gate in Le Puy-en-Velay in the Auvergne., printmaker: Willem Adrianus Grondhout (signed by artist), 1888 - 1931, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, etching with plate tone in brown, height 218 mm x width 141 mm, gate, entrance, Le Puy-en-Velay, A sepia-toned etching shows a narrow arched passageway flanked by tall textured walls, with a large rounded arch dominating the left side and a flight of worn steps rising on the right. Within the darker recesses under the arch are indistinct grouped shapes suggesting people seated or gathered around low tables, and an opening further back reveals a distant figure or form framed by vertical lines. A decorative lamp or lantern hangs near the center above a small ornate bracket, and heavy crosshatched shading creates deep contrasts between shadowed areas and lighter ground surfaces. The foreground shows a broad, worn pathway with scratch-like marks and smudges, while vertical and diagonal etched lines render the stone surfaces and architectural details throughout the scene.
