On the street various horsemen., printmaker: Marius Bauer (signed by artist), 1899, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, etching with plate tone, height 127 mm x width 177 mm, riding a horse, ass, or mule, rider, horseman, city-gate, South India, Andhra Pradesh, Deccan, Hyderabad, A detailed sepia-toned sketch shows a large arched gateway set into a rectangular wall with smaller arched openings along its upper edge, flanked by high walls and adjacent architectural elements; numerous loosely drawn figures populate the foreground, some mounted on horses and others standing or walking, many wearing flowing garments and head coverings; clusters of people gather near the gateway and along the surrounding walls, with a few taller figures carrying long poles or standards; on the left, a sloped wall leads up to ornamental turrets and domed shapes, while on the right tall vertical forms and draped fabric frame the scene; the ground is sketched with irregular lines and scattered small groups and individual figures, and the sky above is mostly blank with a few light hatch marks.
