The prints were produced by various artists based on drawings by Daniel Chodowiecki. In 1774 the collected print work was published under the title: Kupfersammlung zu JB Basedows Elementarwerk für die Jugend und ihre Freunde., Person, Johann Bernhard Basedow, bombardment, siege, A wide panoramic ink drawing shows a fortified town and surrounding landscape rendered in fine linework. In the foreground there are textured hills and clumps of trees with detailed foliage, leading to a large angled earthen rampart topped by defensive walls and bastions. Behind the rampart a network of fortifications, angular walls, and moats extends toward the middle ground, where plumes of smoke rise from several points and drift across the scene. The town beyond the defenses contains tightly packed buildings and churches with tall steeples and a prominent tower, and small boats and ships are visible on the water near the horizon. The sky is filled with layered cloud forms drawn with crosshatching and parallel lines, and the entire composition uses delicate hatching and stippling to convey texture and depth.
