On the left bank there are closely spaced houses and buildings partly obscured by tree trunks, and a narrow strip of grass at the water's edge. On the right bank a continuous line of uniform buildings extends into the distance beneath another avenue of trees, and a raised embankment slopes down to the canal. In the background a larger building with a tower rises above the treeline, appearing softened by distance and pale light. The overall image has a muted, sepia-toned palette and a soft, hazy atmosphere.
