The woman wears a flowing dress and has hair parted and smoothed back; the man wears a jacket and has facial hair. The figures sit on ornate chairs with carved backs and a draped curtain is visible behind them. A framed oval portrait hangs on the wall to the right above a cushioned piece of furniture. A round basket or footstool sits in front of the figures at floor level and a small box is beneath the woman's skirt. The engraving is set within a worn and stained paper mount showing scratches and smudges, and there is a handwritten label in dark ink at the bottom right of the mount.
