Two laborers outside, one standing and one sitting, sketchbook page, Two men are drawn outside on uneven terrain. The standing man on the left wears a loincloth (veshti, lungi) lifted to above his knees and is otherwise completely wrapped in a shawl (chadar). Only the fingers of his left hand and his head protrude. On the right, a man is sitting on a wooden beam (or stone). He wears only a loincloth, lifted to above the knees. The folds hang on and next to the seating beam. The upper body and arms are uncovered. The clothing suggests an origin from South India or Jaffna. The men were probably put to work in Colombo for the reconstruction. One figure stands draped in layered, flowing cloth that wraps around the shoulders and torso, with visible folds and a partially exposed leg; the face is visible with short hair and a neutral expression. The other figure sits on a low block, torso exposed with crossed arms resting on folded legs, detailed musculature and visible feet, and short hair and a contemplative facial expression. The background is mostly blank with faint ground shading beneath the seated figure and subtle paper speckling.
