Sinhalese soldier and a labourer, sketchbook page, Outside, two men are standing on uneven ground. The man on the left is dressed in a knee-length loincloth (veshti, lungi), wrapped in the Sinhalese manner, with a wide, tight waistband folded in half to hold something. Over this is a short Portuguese jacket with wide sleeves (hettaya), high-necked with buttons and finished at the bottom with a narrow pleated band. Under his bent left arm, he holds a rolled-up cloth. He is a lowland Sinhalese (goviya caste) and probably a mercenary (lascorijn) who possibly acted as a messenger. The man on the right is dressed in a knee-length loincloth (veshti, lungi). A second cloth (chadar) is draped over his left shoulder and hangs down his back. His upper body and arms are uncovered. A cloth is wrapped around his head. He probably hails from South India, brought to Colombo as a laborer.
