Two Sinhalese soldiers, sketchbook page, Two men are standing outside on uneven terrain. The man on the left is drawn from the side on the right. His upper body is uncovered. He wears a knee-length loincloth (veshti, lungi) wrapped in the Sinhalese style. Of the medium-length sword (kastane) carried on his left hip, we see only the decorated hilt with a small lion's head and the curled end of the scabbard. He wears a round, brimless cap. The man on the right is drawn from the front. He wears a buttoned-up short jacket with long sleeves and a pleated hem (hettaya), underneath which is a knee-length loincloth (veshti, lungi) wrapped in the Sinhalese style, and a high waistband around the waist. In his right hand he carries something that looks like a small pouch, and a long stick leaning against his right shoulder is probably a lance or a spear. Under his left arm protrudes the decorated hilt of a short sword (kastane). On his head is a typical cap (or helmet?): tall, stiff, with a point at the front. Both men are Sinhalese mercenaries (lascorins), now in the service of the Dutch. They belong to the Goviya caste.
