Two Sinhalese soldiers, sketchbook page, Outside by a wall – or inside in a corner of a building – two young men are sitting next to each other on a bench. A low retaining wall appears to have been built under the bench. Both men are drawn from a diagonal angle from the front, back to the right and legs, knees to the left. Both wear a half-length hip garment (veshti, lungi) wrapped in the Sinhalese style and a wide waistband. Above this, a short, buttoned-up jacket with long sleeves and a pleated hem (hettaya). A small collar hanging backwards is visible at the neck. The man on the left sits with bent knees and keeps his feet under the bench. On his lap, he holds a cap (?) with both hands. The man on the right sits with his legs stretched forward, left foot over the right. He keeps his arms outstretched, hands between his legs. His hair is hidden under a tall cap. He has a short, bushy beard. On his left hip he carries a long sword (kastane) with a decorated hilt; the sword's scabbard rests against the edge of the bench. Both men are Sinhalese mercenaries (lascorins), now in the service of the Dutch. They belong to the Goviiya caste.
