Three laborers, sketchbook page, Three men are depicted outdoors in uneven terrain. The man on the left is merely a sketch. He is lying on the ground, facing the viewer, sleeping on his side with his knees drawn up. He is wearing only a loincloth (veshti, lungi). His hair is short-shaven. Further forward, standing diagonally behind a pile of earth, are the two other men. The men have short, curly hair. They both hold a worn felt hat (toppiya) in their left hand. Both wear a double-folded loincloth reaching to the knee, tucked in at the waist. The man in the middle has a cloth tied over his right shoulder; the man on the right is wearing something resembling a sleeveless vest (kamisaya) of checkered fabric. The middle man carries a large cleaver (machete) over his right arm. The man on the right carries a pickaxe over his right shoulder, holding the point with his right hand. Judging by their appearance and clothing, the men likely come from South India or Jaffna, all brought to Colombo for reconstruction work.
