Toddy tapper and Sinhalese soldier, sketchbook page, Two men are standing outside on a slope. The man on the left is a palm wine tapper. He is wearing a double-folded and high-waisted loincloth (veshti, lungi). His upper body and legs are uncovered. On his left hip, he carries an earthenware pot (labu katey) for collecting the palm wine (toll cart or toddy), suspended in a net of cords by which the pot can be carried. Behind the pot hangs a wooden tube containing a bundle of tools: knives to cut into the flower of the coconut palm and a hammer (thalanaya) to flatten the flower. Around his head, the man wears a wreath of leaves, possibly to ward off insects. The man on the right is a Sinhalese mercenary (lascorijn). He is dressed in a knee-length loincloth (veshti, lungi), worn in the Sinhalese manner. His feet are hidden behind the drawn slope. The upper body is uncovered. A kastane (short sword) hangs from his left side, the hilt of which protrudes high. On his right side, a dagger protrudes above the tucked-in waistband. On his head, the man wears a tall cap with a turned-up brim.
