Both carry brown backpacks with rolled gray blankets strapped on top and white crossbelts across their chests. The left figure is shown in a three-quarter front view with hands clasped, red and gold trim on his collar and cuffs, and red epaulettes with black striping; the right figure is shown in profile holding a long musket with a fixed bayonet, a black cartridge pouch at his side, and gold-accented belt fittings. Both wear black shoes and stand on a patch of ground with grass, and the illustration is rendered with fine line work and colored shading.
