Gardens seen from Drottningholm Castle, Effigies Euripi salientium labentiumque aquarum Horti Drottningholmensis, Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, print, album page, printmaker: Willem Swidde, Stockholm, supervision: Erik Jönssen Dahlberg, 1692, paper, etching, etching in two parts, folded, height 216 mm x width 424 mm, garden, Lovön, Slot Drottningholm (Lovön), A wide, detailed engraving shows a formal garden seen from an elevated vantage, with symmetrical parterres, pathways, fountains, sculptural elements, and figures scattered throughout. In the foreground a broad terrace features a central fountain with figures around it, bordered by low balustrades and ornamented planting beds. Beyond the terrace, geometric garden compartments contain clipped hedges, circular and curved beds, ornamental trees, and small sculptural elements, with numerous people walking, standing, and conversing along straight avenues and between garden plots. Tall, rectangular hedged structures form a long, linear maze or series of enclosed courts extending toward the middle distance, flanked by rows of regularly spaced trees. The far background displays rolling hills, scattered buildings, and expanses of planted groves and open fields under a clouded sky. The entire scene is rendered in fine, monochrome engraved lines with careful crosshatching for shading and texture.
