The Holy Trinity; verso: architectural sketch, Pordenone (1483 or 1484–1539). On the recto a preparatory sketch for an altar painting for the cathedral in San Daniele del Friuli, corresponding to a painting recorded as completed and paid for in a document dated January 22, 1535, so the drawing predates 1535. The work uses a variant of Trinitarian iconography known as the Throne of Grace, emphasizing the salvific nature of Christ's sacrifice. The majestic depiction reflects Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone’s familiarity with Renaissance art of Rome and Michelangelo, and with northern Italian achievements (especially Andrea Mantegna), employing contrasting combinations and strong chiaroscuro. On the reverse is a small architectural sketch; during conservation in 1984–1985 the weakened paper was reinforced by doublure with Japanese tissue. Before 1535; Venice, Italy.
