Denarius, Boleslaw III Krzywousty (prince of Poland; 1107–1138). Romanesque coin, ca. 1125–1138, Kraków, Poland; diameter 12.3–12.6 mm, weight 0.41 g. Obverse: in beaded border, a knight in chain mail thrusting a spearhead into the jaws of an upside-down dragon; a sun under the knight’s right elbow. Reverse: in triple beaded border, an isosceles cross topped with balls; at the intersection of the arms a ball; between the arms single balls (three with one dot each; the fourth area is blurred). Iconography: knight, dragon, spear/spearhead, chain mail, equal-armed cross, mouths, crosses, martyrs, Adalbert (Saint, ca. 956–997), fight of good against evil, fight against pagans; Medieval/Romanesque style.
