denarius, Boleslaw III Krzywousty (prince of Poland; 1086–1138), Romanesque style, allegorical imagery, Obverse: in beaded border, a knight in chain mail thrusting a spearhead into the jaws of an upside-down dragon; under the knight's right elbow, an isosceles cross with arms terminating in balls. Reverse: in triple beaded border, an isosceles cross terminating in balls; at the intersection of the arms, a ball; between the arms, three balls (a fourth may be present; under-striking obscures observation). Inscriptions/marks: spearhead (issue mark). Themes: martyrs, Adalbert (St.; ca. 956–997), fight against pagans, fight between good and evil. Date: ca. 1125–1138. Place: Poland, Kraków.
