Denarius, Boleslaw III Krzywousty (prince of Poland; 1107–1138). Obverse: in the beaded border, a knight in chain mail thrusting a spearhead into the jaws of an upside-down dragon. Reverse: in the triple beaded border, an isosceles cross topped with balls; between its arms, one ball (three of them have one dot each; the fourth may also have one—this quarter is difficult to observe). Allegorical imagery: equal-armed cross, chain mail, spearhead (issue mark), crosses, mouth, knight, martyrs, dragons; themes of fight between good and evil and fight against pagans; Romanesque style.
