denarius, Boleslaw III Krzywousty (prince of Poland; 1086–1138 / reign 1107–1138), Romanesque style, ca. 1125–1138, Poland, Kraków. Obverse: in a beaded border, a knight in chain mail thrusting a spearhead into the upside-down jaws of a dragon. Reverse: in a triple beaded border, an isosceles cross topped with balls; at the intersection of the arms a ball; one arm intersects the other at approximately 1/3 of its length. Allegorical imagery: knights, dragons, fight between good and evil; motifs include spearhead (issue mark), equal-armed cross, spears, chain mail. Diameter 12.2 mm, weight 0.40 g.
