Sestertius of Antoninus Pius (86–161; Roman emperor 138–161). Obverse: head of Antoninus Pius in a laurel wreath facing right, legend 'ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TR' (circumferential). Reverse: Salus standing left, holding a patera above an altar around which a snake coils, and in left hand an inverted rudder; legend 'C•OS•IIII' (circumferential), with mintmark S•C in the fields. Iconography: Antoninus Pius; Salus (personification); snakes; altars; rudders. Date: 145–161 CE, Roman Empire (27 BC–476), Rome. Coin: bronze sestertius, diameter c. 30–31 mm, weight 23.40 g, axis 0°.
