Crucifixion Polyptych from Pruszcz — middle part: carved wooden altarpiece panel depicting the Road to Golgotha with the Carrying of the Cross (left), the Crucifixion (center), and the Lamentation (right), framed by richly fragmented tracery canopies and small typologically paired scenes from the Old and New Testaments at the sides. The carved wardrobe is divided vertically into three zones in a standing-rectangle format, the central zone higher than the side ones (by 2/5 of the height). In the central zone three large Gothic windows appear in the background, and despite a landscape background with rocky ground and buildings the windows suggest the scene takes place in the church chancel. A strip of tracery decoration runs along the full width as a plinth. The sculptures are gilded except for painted faces and hands in flesh tones; background architecture and tracery are also gilded. ca. 1500, Antwerp; altar; height 242.0 cm, width 288.0 cm, thickness 41.3 cm., A large ornate wooden altarpiece with a central section and hinged wings, richly carved with Gothic architectural tracery in gold tones and dark brown wood, populated by a group of many carved figures arranged in scenes; the central upper area features a crucifix with a pale figure on a cross flanked by darker carved figures, while below and to the sides there are several groups of small carved people in various poses wearing garments painted in muted golds, browns, greens, blues, and pale flesh tones; the side panels and wings include painted rectangular panels with standing figures in robes in colors such as pink, teal, green, and brown against muted architectural or interior backgrounds, and the lower front shows a row of sculpted figures and draped forms with highlighted gold leaf and darker shadows, all set against a deep bluish-gray surrounding wall.
