Officier Turc, Le Prince, Jean-Baptiste (1734-1781), graphic artist. Compositions on 'Oriental' themes are the fruit of Le Prince's stay in Russia; he stayed there until 1763. In addition to illustrations for travel publications, he produced a series of graphics presenting Russian and Turkish costumes. On the title page of Habillement de diverses nations he included figures in Turkish turbans and transposed regional attire. The officer depicted in the engraving has a saber with an open hilt (karabela-type), belted at his side, and is most likely leaning on a mace with a strong handle and metal pommel (the mace being the weapon of officers and military dignitaries). The artist altered the mace's shape, 'modernizing' it in a European aesthetic. In the background is a camp with janissaries dressed in caftans and characteristic high caps (ketches). Double-etched etching, shadows and foreground added in the second stage. 1765, Paris, France. Print (graphic print).
