Saint Michael Fighting the Dragon, probably by Jan Maszewski (Masieski, fl. ca. 1750–1800), graphic artist; Witke-Jezewski, Dominik (1862–1944) (mentioned). Depicts Archangel Michael in armor, with a shield and a flaming sword, trampling the fallen Satan portrayed as a dragon with donkey ears, lying on his back in hellish flames. Signature under the image of Saint Casimir: IMVS, expanded as Ian Masieski Vilnesis Sculpsit. Masieski also signed with monograms (e.g., IM V. sc., IMS, IM), suggesting he may have worked in Vilnius. Plates created with a stylus; faces and the head of Christ are stippled. Compositions use characteristic rocaille ornament as frames, cartouches, and bases. Individual plates are numbered, perhaps as book illustrations. In 1767 Maszewski created a frontispiece for J. Kulikowski's Verbi Aeterni, so he may have produced illustrations for a book of saints' lives. 2nd half of the 18th century, Poland.
